Profile of The Programme

The Department of International Relations provides education and training with the aim of contributing to meeting Türkiye’s growing need for experts in international relations and foreign policy, and of educating students who understand the multidimensional nature of international relations developing at the global level and who are aware of the needs of today and the future. Examining the history, structure, and functioning of the international system, as well as the behavior of states, international organizations, and non-state actors within this system and their interactions with one another, and analyzing these dynamics on a theoretical basis and within a legal framework, the Department of International Relations adopts as its mission the provision of education grounded in the principles and reforms of Atatürk, alongside contemporary values and approaches. Within this program, education and training are provided with a particular emphasis on the history of the international system formed by the states of the world, the stages it has undergone, its political, economic, and legal structure and functioning, as well as Türkiye’s position within this system and its foreign relations. Through a curriculum designed from this perspective, the Department aims to enable its students to develop critical and analytical skills by employing the core methods of the discipline of international relations.

Qualification Awarded

Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a "bachelor's" diploma in international relations.

Specific Admission Requirements

- Having a high school or equivalent school diploma,
- Being entitled to be placed in the department according to the Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) conducted by the Evaluation, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM).

Specific Arrangements For Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of previous (formal) learning in the Department of International Relations; It is carried out within the framework of the "Regulation on the Transition Between Associate Degree and Undergraduate Degree Programs in Higher Education Institutions, Double Major, Minor and Inter-Institutional Credit Transfer" determined by the Higher Education Council within the scope of vertical, horizontal and university transitions. However, exemption exams are held at the beginning of each semester for compulsory English courses (English I, II, III, IV) in the curriculum of the department. Students who complete their own learning process from these courses or think that they provide learning outcomes in these courses in different ways have the right to take these exams. Students who are successful in the exam are exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The Department of International Relations is subject to a degree system based on 240 ECTS credits. This total consists of compulsory courses that students are required to complete, as well as elective courses that may be taken starting from the third semester. In addition to these courses, students who successfully complete the “Graduation Thesis” in the eighth semester, in accordance with the "Giresun University Associate and Undergraduate Education, Instruction, and Examination Regulations", and who have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.00 out of 4.00, are entitled to graduate from the program.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment of a semester / year for any course in the department consists of homework, practice and other studies provided that there is at least one midterm exam. In the evaluation of each course; The contribution rates of midterm exams, homework, practice and other studies to which students are responsible are taken into consideration. The success grade is calculated from the semester / year evaluation and the semester / year-end exam grades. The contribution of the semester / final exam to the success grade is determined by the responsible of the course to be at least 40% and at most 60%. The resposible of the course can determine the contribution of the studies that will form the semester / year evaluation to the success grade. Students who do not take the year-end or make-up exam are considered unsuccessful. In order to be evaluated from a course or application, the student's final exam grade or make-up grade must be 60 out of 100 points. Students who fall below this score are directly considered unsuccessful. Exams are evaluated over 100 points. The grades that taken in make-up exam by the students who cannot take the final exam due to an excuse accepted by the department chair, replaces the final exam grade. The letter grades of these students are also sent to the Student Affairs Office.

Graduation Requirements

Students who have achieved a minimum GPA of 2.0 out of 4.00 with a minimum of 240 ECTS and have successfully completed their graduation study by taking the compulsory courses available in the program and in addition to the selected courses are eligible to graduate.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Our students who graduate from Giresun University International Relations Department have different job opportunities both in the private and public sectors. Our graduates can be employed in expert staff within the ministries, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, judicial institutions, all units affiliated to ministries, undersecretariats and publishing institutions. We have graduates working in private sector especially in banks, audit companies and enterprises with foreign trade activities within the areas such as financial expertise, sales and marketing, and human resources,in telecommunications and in the media. Our graduates, who prefer an academic career, carry out master's and doctorate studies in various universities at home and abroad. Some of these work as academic staff, especially in the International Relations, Political Science and Public Administration departments.

Access to Further Studies

Students who have successfully completed their undergraduate education can study in postgraduate programs (Master, Doctorate, Proficiency in Art) provided that they get valid grades from the Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES) and have sufficient knowledge of English (with the results of the exams YDS, YÖKDİL, TOEFL etc.)

Facilities

The Department of International Relations is located in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences building on the Güre Campus of Giresun University. The Department currently employs 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 7 assistant professors, and 1 research assistant. Within the faculty building, there are 6 classrooms, 1 lecture hall, and a shared study hall allocated for the use of students of the Department.

4. To interpret and evaluate data by using the knowledge and skills acquired
5. To identify and analyse problems related to foreign policy, and to develop research- and evidence-based solution proposals
6. To conduct an independent study in the field of International Relations.
7. To take a role and participate in the management of an individual or group study in the field of International Relations.
8. To learn English at an intermediate level and a second foreign language at a beginner level.
9. To act in accordance with social and scientific values in the stages of data collection, interpretation, and application in social sciences research.
10. To have the necessary knowledge regarding professional ethics, gender equality, quality culture, and the protection of cultural values
11. To inform relevant individuals and institutions on issues related to the field of International Relations, and to convey ideas and solution proposals to problems in written and oral form
12. To read political, physical, and demographic maps.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

1) Within the first five years after graduation, graduates are expected to work in public institutions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and diplomatic missions in relevant career positions, taking part in foreign policy processes and institutional activities in the field of international relations.

2) Within the first five years after graduation, graduates are expected to be employed in specialist or analyst positions in the private sector, international trade, finance, and consultancy, contributing to international economic and commercial processes.

3) Within the first five years after graduation, graduates are expected to work in non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and think tanks as specialists or project staff, taking part in policy development, implementation, and monitoring processes.

4) Within the first two years after graduation, graduates are expected to pursue graduate studies in national and international programs as academic candidates, continuing their specialization in international relations and related disciplines.

5) Within the first five years after graduation, graduates are expected to take on various professional roles in institutions and organizations operating at regional and global levels, participating in international cooperation and multilateral interaction processes.
